Ohio State University Medical Students participate in the the Department of Family Medicine Summer Externship, which is offered between the first and second year of medical school. Students can pursue either the Clinical Externship or the Clinical Research Externship.
The Clinical Externship is designed to promote interest in and understanding of family practice, especially in underserved areas. Students are matched with a rural or urban preceptor, spending time in the preceptor’s office. The student experiences vary with preceptor and student interest. Students may be exposed to hospitals, physical therapy, med flights, coroner cases, inpatient rounds and procedures, activities in departments of health, occupational medicine, and other experiences as can be provided. This program provides a stipend, which may require completion of a patient education project.
Session 1 : June 11 - July 6, 2012
Session 2 : July 9 - August 3, 2012
The first-year OSU medical students will be notified by E-mail of the opportunity and program dates. Those who wish to apply will fill out an application.
Summer Externship 2012 Application
The deadline to submit an application will be noted on the application form. Those who are selected will be notified by mid March 2012. For more information contact Amy.Peters@osumc.edu.
The Clinical Research Externship is designed to promote interest in and understanding of primary care research. A student extern will be matched with a Family Medicine faculty member to either pursue a project developed by the student under the faculty member's supervision or to contribute to a faculty member's ongoing research. There are a variety of research activities with which the student can participate and qualify for funding, and the specific research activities selected for the externship depend on the projects underway at the time of the summer externship period and whether the student plans to initiate his/her own research project under faculty supervision. The program provides a stipend, and that stipend amount is based on the duration of the externship completed.
At the time of application to the Clinical Research Externship, students will need to have completed the requirements set up by the Office of Responsible Research Practices and the Office of Research Compliance for all who participate in the design, conduct, and reporting of human subjects research at the institution. The training and reporting can be completed using the below links:
The Clinical Research Externship is generally offered as a six-week commitment to be completed between the first and second week of June and the second week of August, but a shorter commitment with a prorated stipend may be considered for students that are not available for a six-week period.
Students interested in pursuing the Clinical Research Externship should contact Jennifer.Lehman@osumc.edu by November 15th in order to identify a faculty supervisor and assess potential funding. Students interested in pursuing their own research are strongly encouraged to consider application to the Medical Student Research Scholarship through the College of Medicine.
