Students may be exposed to hospitals, physical therapy, med flights, coroner cases, inpatient rounds and procedures, activities in departments of health, occupational medicine, and other experiences as can be provided. This program provides a stipend, which may require completion of a patient education project.

Clinical Research Externship

The Clinical Research Externship is designed to promote interest in and understanding of primary care research. A student extern will be matched with a Family Medicine faculty member to either pursue a project developed by the student under the faculty member's supervision or to contribute to a faculty member's ongoing research. There are a variety of research activities with which the student can participate and qualify for funding, and the specific research activities selected for the externship depend on the projects underway at the time of the summer externship period and whether the student plans to initiate his/her own research project under faculty supervision. The program provides a stipend, and that stipend amount is based on the duration of the externship completed.

Program Goals

  • Understand the role of clinical research as it pertains to patient care
  • Understand the major steps involved in clinical research
  • Understand the role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) in human subjects protection and the importance of informed consent and HIPAA as it relates to clinical research
  • Understand the importance of careful planning and implementation of clinical research

Program Requirements

At the time of application to the Clinical Research Externship, students will need to have completed the requirements set up by the Office of Responsible Research Practices and the Office of Research Compliance for all who participate in the design, conduct, and reporting of human subjects research at the institution. The training and reporting can be completed using the below links:

Program Dates

The Clinical Research Externship is generally offered as a six-week commitment to be completed between the first and second week of June and the second week of August, but a shorter commitment with a prorated stipend may be considered for students that are not available for a six-week period.

Application Procedure

Students interested in pursuing the Clinical Research Externship should contact Jennifer.Lehman@osumc.edu by November 15th in order to identify a faculty supervisor and assess potential funding. Students interested in pursuing their own research are strongly encouraged to consider application to the Medical Student Research Scholarship through the College of Medicine.
