The Vice Chair of Research position functions to nurture, encourage, and facilitate research relative to the mission, vision, and goals of the Ohio State Department of Family Medicine.
Role Model
Has a demonstrated history of NIH funding and maintains a personal research program to include NIH and/or comparable funding of an R01 and Program/Center nature; and advances the content and practice of family medicine while leading and mentoring other departmental researchers.
Research Administration
Initiates, coordinates, and administers policies, procedures, and activities which enhance research in the Department; oversees Department research units, committees, and related entities; reviews and makes recommendations regarding proposed appointments, promotions, and merit increases for departmental personnel that are research related; facilitates the development of proposals for extramural funding of research; fosters interaction with federal, state, and private agencies and with industry to promote departmental research programs; coordinates departmental policies and practices related to interaction with industry; promotes research ethics and receives and resolves allegations of research misconduct; coordinates research compliance; and represents Department on College, University, and external research committees and forums.
Contract and Grant Administration
Develops policy and directs the administration of the Department's contract and grant activity, including the functions of award negotiation, proposal processing, and coordination with granting foundations and agencies to serve the Department research community in context with the Ohio State University Research Foundation; resolves research issues that have potential college and university impact; reviews and approves contract and grant proposals requiring matching funds or policy exceptions; reviews, approves, and monitors state, federal, and University conflict of interest requirements; and provides policy guidance to departmental level discussions about University relationships with industry; and assists in defining/creating Department policies to address current issues related to conflict of commitment, use of University facilities, student interactions, etc.
Intellectual Property Management
Formulates and administers departmental policies related to intellectual property, including patents and copyrights; develops faculty and industry liaisons and education programs to facilitate cooperative research activity; and is liaison to University Office of Director of Technology Licensing & Commercialization.
External Research Relations
Works closely with College-level administration to include the Associate Dean for Research and the Assistant Vice President and Advisor for Health Policy and Government Relations; develops strategy, activities, and advocacy to promote Department research priorities; and facilitates research partnerships involving College, University, and state and federal organizations.
General Administration
Advises the Chair, Vice Chair of Academic & Faculty Affairs, and others on research matters and budget priorities and resource allocations; advises and makes recommendations on the review and resolution of research-related issues and relations; and serves on Executive Committee.
The Vice Chair of Research reports to the Chair of the Department. The Vice Chair of Research will function collaboratively and have equal status with other Vice Chairs of the Department. The Director of Research reports to the Vice Chair of Research.
The Vice Chair of Research serves a maximum term of four years in concert with the term of the Chair and is eligible for reappointment.
The Vice Chair of Research will have formal education at the MD, DO, and/or PhD degree level; successful experience in conducting and completing research projects of consequence and complexity, as well as a significant record of disseminating results; experience in research review processes and demonstrated success in obtaining external funding, especially from the NIH; capacity in both interpersonal and public relations to facilitate broad-scale research activities relative to commercial, private, and public sectors; and capacity to work with a range of investigative ideas.
