The Director of the Ohio State Family Medicine Residency Program is responsible for education and training of all residents regardless of track: Main, Urban, Rural, or Academic. The Residency Director will be a full-time faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine, either in the regular tenure track or the regular clinical track.
Education Administration
Develops, maintains, and expands education-related resources; initiates, coordinates, and administers policies, procedures, and activities which enhance education and training in the Residency Program; determines the type and the number of faculty and staff needed; prepares appropriate job descriptions; supervises faculty and staff on a regular basis; evaluates the performance of faculty and staff on a regular basis; facilitates the development of proposals for extramural funding of education programs; contributes to departmental strategic planning efforts and assures accomplishments pertinent to existing strategic plan(s); and represents Department on College, Medical Center, University, and external education committees and forums.
Training Settings
Responsible for operations of the Family Practice Center(s); identifies and provides appropriate facilities in which residents can train under the supervision of qualified faculty; develops training-related policies and procedures for the Family Practice Center(s), other ambulatory training settings, and in-patient service(s); serves as liaison between the Family Medicine Residency Training Program and other medical and surgical residency programs; and represent the program at the Institutional Post-MD Graduate Medical Education Committee.
Residents
Screens prospective residents in accord with approved criteria; orients new residents to Family Practice Center(s), hospital(s), and other health care resources; establishes training schedules for each resident including continuity of care training at the Family Practice Center(s); stimulates residents to be aware of their roles in the delivery of comprehensive health care; provides meaningful supervision of the residents through chart review and on-site supervision; provides constructive criticism for the residents ensuring constant professional improvement; evaluates residents’ activities throughout all phases of training, including periodic review of RRC-FP requirements, recommending changes as necessary; is alert to residents in stress and available to assist with particular problems; and assists residents in career development and placement in needed areas of Ohio, or elsewhere.
Curriculum and Teaching
Develops a curriculum emphasizing family medicine principles that includes proper balance between the disciplines of medicine, surgery, behavioral science, and ancillary health disciplines; evaluates existing curriculum on a continual basis, recommending changes as needed; provides a qualified teaching faculty, evaluating on a regular basis their abilities to interact with residents and their skills arid abilities as faculty; and evaluates the training program on a regular basis to ensure optimal educational experiences for each resident.
Regulatory Issues
Prepares RRC-FM Program Information Form(s) for accreditation purposes; responds to RRC-FM communications and directives; and maintains accreditation.
Patient Care
Maintains an appropriate clinical practice.
The Residency Director reports to the Chair of the Department. Like all residency directors within the Medical Center, the Residency Director is responsible to the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education for issues that are RRC-FM related. The Residency Director seeks leadership and guidance from the Vice Chairs of the Department, particularly the Vice Chair of Education. The Residency Director works collaboratively with other directors of education-related units. Each Associate Residency Director reports to the Residency Director.
The Residency Director will: 1) be trained as a family physician, Board Certified in Family Medicine, and licensed in Ohio to practice medicine, 2) demonstrate career experiences relevant to the position, and 3) be able to demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, and service.
