The Predoctoral Director is responsible for family medicine related education and training of medical students as they matriculate through each of the four years of the medical curriculum.  This will include college-sponsored courses in which departmental faculty teach and courses for which the Department is singularly responsible.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Education Administration

Develops, maintains, and expands education-related resources; initiates, coordinates, and administers policies, procedures, and activities which enhance education in the Department; determines the type and the number of faculty and staff needed; prepares appropriate job descriptions; supervises faculty and staff on a regular basis; evaluates the performance of faculty and staff on a regular basis; facilitates the development of proposals for extramural funding of education programs; contributes to departmental strategic planning efforts and assures accomplishments pertinent to existing strategic plan(s); and represents Department on College, University, and external education committees and forums.

Pre-Clinical Curriculum

Recruits faculty to teach and facilitate relative to the Colleges two two-year, longitudinal courses, Patient Centered Medicine and Physician Development; matches faculty to course(s); and assures that family medicine faculty are prepared and able to be effective in their teaching/facilitation roles as judged by the respective course directors.

Summer Externships

Identifies sufficient and appropriate preceptor sites for students requesting summer externships; seeks funding to pay students requesting summer externships; and evaluates summer externship experiences to assure students’ needs are met.

Clinical Curriculum

Coordinates planning of didactic and experiential curriculum of required third-year clerkship; maintains adequate number of qualified family physician preceptors to provide for necessary monthly allotment of third-year students assigned to and/or electing family medicine clerkship; coordinates planning of experiential curriculum of elective and selective fourth-year preceptorships; and maintains adequate number of qualified family physician preceptors to provide for number of fourth-year students electing a fourth-year family medicine preceptorship.  

Family Practice Interest Group and Family Medicine Leadership Development Program

Serves as Faculty Advisor; assures that the various committees and sub-interest groups are staffed and populated; and coordinates submission of applications to Program of Excellence and Special Awards offered each year by the American Academy of Family Physicians. 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Predoctoral Director reports to the Chair of the Department.   The Predoctoral Director seeks leadership and guidance from the Vice Chairs of the Department, particularly the Vice Chair of Education.  The Predoctoral Director works collaboratively with other directors of education-related units. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Predoctoral Director will: 1) be trained as a family physician and Board Certified in Family Medicine, 2) demonstrate career experiences relevant to the position, and 3) be able to demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching, relevant research and scholarship, and service.
