The Ohio State Department of Family Medicine sponsors a Summer Externship Program for medical students between their first and second year of study. This program matches students interested in family medicine with family physicians primarily in rural areas, sometimes in urban areas, of Ohio. Students see patients in the office setting, plus gain experience in local hospitals, departments of health, and extended care facilities. Students, given an opportunity to experience family medicine in a personal way early in their education, tend to maintain a higher interest in family medicine as they choose their future careers in medicine. The Lancionne Fund provides a major means to support the students each year. Below are the students who have benefited in recent years from this ongoing support.
